Serpukhov Culture and Recreation Park

About museum

In 1872 a city park was established in Serpukhov, which before the Revolution was called the public garden. It was created with funds from philanthropists and the city's residents and was open to people of all social classes. Trees were planted there, a pond was dug, and pavilion buildings were erected for reading newspapers and playing chess, as well as a gazebo and areas for ball games and croquet. During the war years the park was destroyed, but after restoration it was named "Park named after Oleg Stepanov", a Hero of the Soviet Union. In the Soviet period the state provided significant funds for the development and maintenance of parks, so on the park grounds the "Central" cinema, the "Style" restaurant and two summer cafés were built; a perimeter fence was installed; the pond was cleaned and a pier was constructed; the alleys were tiled and sports grounds were erected. Since 2004 the park has operated as the Municipal Cultural Institution of the city of Serpukhov, Moscow Region, "Park of Culture".
