Monument-museum Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior on Nereditsa
About museum
The Church of the Savior on Nereditsa was built by the Novgorod prince Yaroslav Vladimirovich in 1198 in three to four months. Possibly the eponymous male monastery was founded at the same time. The church was erected as a memorial monument in memory of the prince's two deceased sons and the princely family. It was built by the well-known master Korov Yakovich from Lubyana Street. The Nereditsa church is a vivid and representative example of Novgorod architecture of the late 12th century: of medium size, single-domed, three-apsed, with zakomara-style terminations of the facades, a restrained decorative scheme, four square pillars inside, choir galleries and an internal wall staircase. In the southwest corner on the choir galleries there was a side chapel, and on the west side there was a lowered narthex. Characteristic features of this structure are the lowered side apses, spacious choir galleries, and six burial niches (arcosolia) in the walls.
