Oryol Museum of Fine Arts
About museum
The Oryol Provincial Museum was opened in 1957. Its founding is associated with the name of the opera singer A. N. Nikolaev, who in 1899 donated his collections. The museum gradually received other works of art from nationalized noble estates, as well as works by artists of the Russian avant-garde from the Museum of Painting Culture in Moscow. The museum's collections include Old Russian and Russian art of the 18th–20th centuries, national art of the 20th century (painting, graphics, sculpture, decorative-applied and folk art, including works by Oryol artists and traditional and contemporary folk crafts). The museum building was constructed in 1959 according to a standard design, and in 1990 a partial reconstruction was carried out according to a project by architect V. I. Revyakin. It is a monument of history and culture of regional significance. The museum houses more than six thousand items.
