Okhotsk District Local History Museum named after E.F. Morokov

About museum

Okhotsk Local History Museum opened on July 10, 1962. Its founder and first director was Yevgeny Fyodorovich Morokov — a well-known Okhotsk local historian and journalist. In 1984, by order of the Ministry of Culture, the museum was awarded the honorary title "People's" for its extensive work in preserving and promoting historical and cultural monuments. Since 2021 the museum has been a district museum.

Its unique museum collection comprises over 2,000 storage units, and the exhibition area is 138 sq. m. Guided tours, lectures, and museum lessons on history and biology are organized for visitors, and events are held on significant dates.

The museum's exhibitions include: archaeological monuments of the Okhotsk district, the traditional culture of the Evens, the coastal birdlife, Okhotsk — the cradle of the Pacific Fleet, the gold rush, the Civil War, the period of socialist construction, the people of Okhotsk in the Great Patriotic War, the Okhotsk district in the 1950s–1980s, and the Okhotsk Mining and Geological Company.

Displayed are tools and hunting implements of ancient humans, fossil mammoth tusks, household items of the indigenous Evens, unique exhibits from the period of the exploration and settlement of the Far East in the 18th–19th centuries, reports by officers from the time of Empress Anna Ioannovna, a fragment of an artillery piece from 1733, a collection of minerals from the Sea of Okhotsk coast, and photographs and documents on the history of the Okhotsk district in the 1920s–1980s.
