Northern Fleet Air Force Museum
About museum
On August 20, 1976, in the settlement of Safonovo, on the site of the first seaplane airfield, the Northern Fleet Air Force Museum was opened. This occurred in the year marking the 40th anniversary of the creation of the first aviation formation of the Northern Fleet. In 2013 the museum became a branch of the Federal State Treasury Institution of Culture and Arts 'Naval Museum of the Northern Fleet' of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation. It was established on the initiative of the Political Department of the Northern Fleet Air Forces and decorated by skilled amateurs. Military personnel and veterans of the Northern Fleet Air Forces actively participated in the creation of the museum, including 53 Heroes of the Soviet Union, among them the legendary commander of the 2nd Guards Aviation Regiment, B. F. Safonov. The museum exhibits photographic and documentary materials on the history of Northern Fleet aviation, personal belongings of northern naval aviator veterans, works by the famous frontline photojournalist E. A. Khaldei, as well as works by sculptors and painters. The museum also includes the House-Museum of Y. A. Gagarin, in which memorial rooms have been recreated.
