Vasily Surikov Museum-Estate
About museum
The Vasily Surikov museum-estate, located in Krasnoyarsk, the artist's birthplace, houses one of the largest collections of his works in the world. Visitors can see watercolors, pencil drawings, sketches for famous canvases, as well as personal belongings, letters and photographs. In addition, the Winter Arts Festival dedicated to Surikov is held here annually. The house where the museum is located was built in the 1830s and belonged to the Surikov family. The Krasnoyarsk authorities planned to establish a museum as early as the 1920s, but after the death of Alexander Surikov the house was transferred to the city. In 1948 the museum was opened for the 100th anniversary of Surikov's birth. Every year the museum hosts the Winter Arts Festival in memory of Vasily Surikov. The festival showcases works by artists from various Russian cities and includes master classes and lectures. At the museum visitors can learn about Surikov's life and work and feel like guests in the artist's home.
