Museum of Stone Antiquities 'Lapidary'
About museum
The Lapidary is a collection of ancient art containing items uncovered during excavations of the Bosporan Kingdom and other finds from the territory of the Kerch Peninsula. It houses ancient Greek inscriptions, sculpture and architectural elements, and examples of Hebraic and Turkic tombstones. The ancient Greeks, who founded their city-states on the Black Sea, brought their customs and traditions here, as well as an interest in foreign cultures. As a result, a peculiar syncretic type of culture developed on the Bosporus. The Lapidary preserves numerous sculptural works in stone, marble and limestone. Here one can see portrait images of the Bosporans, memorial and decorative sculpture, works of architectural sculpture, as well as objects of religious (cult) significance.
