About museum
The Russian Museum of Mining, Geology and Speleology is located in an active gypsum mine at a depth of 70 meters. For safety reasons, children under 14 are not allowed in the underground museum. Visitors are provided with special miner's equipment: helmets and lamps. It occupies about 3,000 sq. m and consists of 8 halls. Here you can learn about the history of mining and the industrial development of the local gypsum deposit, which began in the 1930s. The geology hall displays about 300 samples of rocks from Russia and nearby countries. At the center of all this wealth stands a giant statue, 'Mistress of the Gypsum Mountain'. In addition, you can see an underground pond with a waterfall, artificial stalactites, samples of Paleolithic paintings, a shungite room, exhibitions of Gzhel porcelain, products of the Bornukovskaya stone-carving factory, and the halls 'River of Horror' and 'Fiery Gehenna'.
