Children's Picture Gallery, Samara (Klodt Mansion)
About museum
One of the first museums of children's art in Russia. Located in an old mansion dating from the late 19th century. The building's architecture is unique — there's no other like it in Samara! The owner of the house, merchant Ivan Andreevich Klodt, was of German origin. He commissioned the mansion's design from the most famous Samara architect of his time, Alexander Shcherbachev.
The museum's historical exhibition tells about what merchant Klodt did and what surrounded him. One of the rooms houses everyday items from the turn of the 19th–20th centuries. Here you can hear the sounds of a music box and a harmonium, view three-dimensional photographs in a stereoscope, and see an antique telephone and a cash register.
The house itself is of historical interest: its architecture, preserved layout, and interiors. Based on surviving originals, doors, fittings, and window shutters were reconstructed — all exactly as they were in the Klodt house. One of the most memorable symbols of the house and the main ornament of the dining room is an original glazed-tile fireplace of deep emerald color.
The Children's Picture Gallery holds thousands of children's drawings from around the world created over 70 years, works by professional artists, and a collection of designer costume dolls. These exhibits form the basis of the museum's annual exhibitions. Another popular theme is the history and culture of the city of Samara and the wider region.
In addition to the permanent exhibition and temporary shows, the museum runs art workshops to develop children's visual creativity, hosts master classes, lectures, and walking tours for children and adults.
