Mordovian Republican Museum of Fine Arts named after S.D. Erzia
About museum
Mordovian Republican Museum of Fine Arts named after S.D. Erzia was founded in 1960. In addition to the main building, the museum complex includes: the Museum of Mordovian Folk Culture, an exhibition hall, and branches: the S.D. Erzia House-Museum in the village of Baevo and the F.V. Sychkov House-Museum in the village of Kochelaevo.
The main building houses the museum's permanent exhibitions dedicated to the work of the outstanding 20th-century sculptor S.D. Erzia, the painter of the “joy of being” F.V. Sychkov, and the academic portrait painter I.K. Makarov. The collection currently contains more than 15,000 items — Russian, contemporary national, decorative and applied arts, and works by artists of Mordovia. All exhibitions are equipped with touch information panels with a bilingual navigation system and audio guides. The museum operates a Virtual Branch of the State Russian Museum.
The formation of the collection of folk and decorative-applied art of Russia and Mordovia was carried out thanks to the organization of scientific expeditions to Mordovian villages and beyond the republic. Almost all staff then working at the museum took part in these expeditions. As a result, the museum possesses a unique collection of Mordovian folk art.
