About museum

In 1999 the MBUK 'Kurkieksky Local History Center' was established; its founder is the Lakhdenpokhsky Municipal District. The name was given in honor of the historic center of the Lakhdenpokhsky district — Kurkieki. The center serves as the museum of the Lakhdenpokhsky municipal district, and its tasks include the study of the region's history and nature, scientific research and exhibition work, development of tours and educational programs, organization of conferences and seminars, publication of guidebooks, and development of tourist routes. Special attention is paid to the study of the history of the Karelian people and their material culture within the Lakhdenpokhsky district, as well as to the history of Orthodoxy in the northwestern Lake Ladoga area, the identification of locations of ancient churches, monasteries and Orthodox cemeteries, and the installation of memorial crosses. In 2002 and 2003 the MBUK 'Kurkieksky Local History Center' was recognized as the best municipal museum of the Republic of Karelia based on the results of the republican competition.
