Municipal Autonomous Cultural Institution 'Mamonovsky City Museum'
About museum
On July 23, 2011, when the 'town of axes' was celebrating its 710th birthday, the 'Mamonovsky City Museum' (MGM) was officially opened — a municipal autonomous cultural institution located in the basement premises of a historic building: until 1945 a dairy factory stood here. Local residents and citizens of Germany (199 people in total) and one organization actively participated in the museum's creation. It started with one and a half halls. Today the museum has six exhibition halls with a total area of 350 sq. meters. The museum's collections hold about 5,000 items related to the history of the town and the former administrative district called 'Kreis Heiligenbeil' from the earliest times to the post-war era. The MGM is registered in the State Catalogue of the Museum Fund of the Russian Federation. The museum regularly hosts exhibitions, live music evenings, poetry readings; it is a regular participant in the international 'Night of Museums' event, and staff organize research expeditions. In addition to their museum work, MGM employees actively work beyond the institution's walls — they engage in the restoration and upkeep of historical sites. Despite the lack of interest from a wide circle of tourists in the ancient 'town of axes', there are plenty of unique tourist attractions here. The museum's staff is currently small — two people: Director - Dmitry Adolfovich Shilov; Employee - Konstantin S. Kosenkov. Therefore, when planning your visit to the MGM, it is strongly recommended to arrange the time and program of your visit in advance. Walking tours of the town are organized, visits to the private museum 'Brick of East Prussia' are available, as well as off-site excursions to the ruins of Balga Castle and the ancient Prussian sanctuary 'Romovy'.
