The Local History Museum is part of the Museum Complex of the city of Kuibyshev, together with the V.V. Kuibyshev House-Museum and the exhibition hall.

In the 1970s a decision was made to establish a local history museum in the city. From the memorial V.V. Kuibyshev House-Museum in 1986, 1,816 museum items were transferred to the future local history museum (household items, photographs, newspapers, books, documents of the 19th – first half of the 20th centuries, materials on the history of settlement of the Baraba area, and the emergence and development of the city of Kainsk and the uyezd).
The Kuibyshev Local History Museum was opened by decision of the Novosibirsk Regional Executive Committee No. 50 of December 28, 1988, in the building of the Church of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist in the city of Kuibyshev. Exhibitions opened: 'History of the city of Kainsk. 1722–1917', 'Archaeological research in the territory of Kuibyshev District in the 1970s–1980s'.
From January 1992 the museum's exhibition was temporarily moved to a one-storey wooden building. Until 1995 the Kuibyshev Local History Museum was a branch of the Novosibirsk Regional Museum of Local History.
From 1995 to May 31, 2004, the V.V. Kuibyshev House-Museum and the Kuibyshev Local History Museum were structural subdivisions of the Department of Culture of the Kuibyshev city administration.
On August 16, 2002 the museum received new premises – a two-storey brick building constructed in 1911, a monument of history and culture of regional significance (the merchant mansion of I.A. Levako).
On May 9, 2005 the exhibition 'Our Region during the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945' and a lecture-exhibition hall were opened; in 2007 – the exhibition 'Kainsk. 1722–1917'; in 2009 – the exhibition 'The Stable of Merchant I.A. Levako'; in 2012 – an exhibition in the inner courtyard 'A Merchant's Courtyard Household. Early 20th century', unique in the Novosibirsk Region.

The museum's collection currently totals 50,500 items (main collection – 34,756 items). The funds of the Kuibyshev City Museum Complex represent a collection of museum objects of material and spiritual culture related to the history of Kuibyshev and the district from ancient times to the present day.
