Anzhero-Sudzhensk is one of the oldest towns in Kuzbass. On July 3, 1981 the City Local History Museum was opened; it serves as a center for research and the study of the town. The museum holds more than 48,000 storage units, including paleontological, archaeological, geological, ethnographic, and numismatic collections, as well as documentary and material sources. Anzhero-Sudzhensk is home to the Sudzhenskaya mine, founded in 1897 by L. A. Mikhelson, which was scheduled to be closed on the eve of its 100th anniversary. The museum presents exhibits dedicated to topics such as "The City in the Siblag System", "Formation of Anzhero-Sudzhensk's Population", and "The Role of the Anzhero-Sudzhensk Aeroclub in Training Military Pilots, 1938–1948." Permanent exhibitions include: "Nature of the Native Land", "The City in the Country's History. The Person in the City's History", and "Dedicated to the Defenders of the Fatherland..." There is much of interest for visitors in Anzhero-Sudzhensk.
