Local History Museum of Velikiye Luki
About museum
In the city of Velikiye Luki, the Local History Museum was opened in February 1919. It consisted of three departments: historical-geographical, botanical-zoological and physical-mechanical, and its collections were formed from various sources. The main task of the museum was to provide visual aids to impoverished schools. The period of the Great Patriotic War led to the loss of all the museum's collections. In 1950 a new Local History Museum was established, and from 1979 to 2005 it was part of the Pskov State United Historical, Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve. The museum building, located on Matrosov Square, has three exhibition halls. The museum's holdings comprise more than 34,000 items, and the building's designers were architects A. Belokon, V. Braynos and A. Konstantinov. The building's decoration involved Moscow artists I. and A. Vasnetsov, B. Talberg, A. Ishina and V. Chelombieva. The museum includes two structural subdivisions: the Memorial House-Museum of Academician I. M. Vinogradov.
