Koryak Okrug Local History Museum
About museum
In 1932 a people's museum was founded, which in 1969 acquired the name 'local history museum'. The museum's holdings comprise more than 16,000 items, and its collections include archaeological, ethnographic, fine and applied arts, as well as photographic and documentary materials related to the history of the Koryaks, Itelmens, Evens and Chukchi. Among the museum's exhibits is the diorama 'Nymylany (Lesnovsky Shore)', created by artists A. Pirozhenko and V. Krupina. The museum seeks to support the cultural revival of Kamchatka's indigenous peoples by preserving ethnographic collections and disseminating information. In the future the museum plans to continue its research and educational activities and to establish links with other local history and ethnographic museums in Russia and abroad.
