About museum
On April 15, 1989, the Gorodishchensky District Council of People's Deputies made the official decision to open a historical and local history museum. Since then the museum has successfully operated permanent exhibitions: the Don Front military hall, a large exhibition hall which includes the exhibitions 'Clothing of the First Settlers', 'Soviet Childhood', the diorama 'Liberation of the settlement Gorodishche — Spring 1943', as well as an exhibition dedicated to the history of the Cossacks. In addition, the museum presents various temporary exhibitions, a presentation hall for mass events, traveling and short-term exhibitions, a merchant's parlor and a bedroom from the late 19th–early 20th century, the 'Peasant Hut' — the everyday life and culture of 19th–20th century peasants, and the tavern 'At the Three Bears'. In 2016 the museum was respectfully named in honor of its founder and first director, Galina Semenovna Shapovalova.
