House-Museum of Yuri Gagarin's School Years
About museum
The House-Museum of Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin is a monument of history and culture of federal significance. It was built in 1933 in the village of Klushino, and in 1945 the Gagarin family moved to Gzhatsk. In 1947 the house was moved to the town and placed on Leningradskaya Street. In 1969 a decision was made to establish a museum here to commemorate the world's first cosmonaut and to popularize the achievements of space exploration. On April 5, 1970 the Memorial Museum of Y. A. Gagarin opened. The 1949 setting — the time of Yuri Gagarin's departure from his native home — has been recreated here. The exhibits will introduce you to the way of life of a simple, hard-working Smolensk family and to the family traditions that helped Yuri Gagarin become the world's first cosmonaut. In the yard there is a monument to Anna Timofeevna Gagarina, the mother of the first cosmonaut. This house-museum is a tribute to the first cosmonaut and an important heritage for all of Russia.
