The museum attracts considerable attention from visitors both from the Tsivilsk district and from other districts and cities. The museum was founded in 1967. Since 2011 it has been housed in the merchant Tolmachev's house, which is listed as a cultural heritage site. The museum's exhibitions include the following sections: 'Peasant Homestead', 'Tsivilsk Merchant', 'Tikhvin Fair', 'History of the Tsivilsk District', 'Time of Troubles — the uprising led by E. Pugachev', 'Borders of Victory — about the Great Patriotic War and recent hotspots'. The museum's collection comprises 1,046 storage units: documents, 20th-century photographs, remains of ancient animals, archaeological items, numismatics, ethnography, blacksmithing artifacts, items from natural science collections, books, and personal belongings of notable local figures. The museum engages in cultural and educational, exhibition, and tourism activities, attracting visitors from various districts and cities.
