The Yaroslavl Art Museum is the largest art museum in the Russian provinces. It was founded in 1919 at the initiative of local artists and antiquarians. The museum's collection consists of more than 75,000 works of Russian art, including 13th-century icons and 21st-century animation. The museum's main building is the Governor's House, built by order of Alexander I in 1812. It served as the official residence of governors from Alexander I to Nicholas II. Since 1970 the Governor's House has been the main building of the Yaroslavl Art Museum; it hosts exhibitions, displays, concerts and celebrations.
