Vladimir Pavlovich Biryukov was a Ural regional historian, folklorist, archaeologist, archivist, lexicographer, and writer. He was born in the village of Pershinskoye in the Perm Governorate (now Kurgan Oblast). Biryukov graduated from the Perm Theological Seminary, the Kazan Veterinary Institute, and the Moscow Archaeological Institute. He also studied at the Moscow Agricultural Institute and attended the Faculty of History and Philology at Tomsk University as an auditor. From 1914 to 1917 he served as a veterinarian in the army.
In 1910 Biryukov founded the first rural local-history museum in the Urals in the village of Pershinskoye. In December 1917 he organized and headed the Shadrinsk Scientific Repository, which included a museum, an art gallery, a library, and an archive. In 1923 Biryukov first became a corresponding member and then a full member of the Central Bureau of Local History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. For archaeological finds in the Shadrinsk uyezd, the Moscow Archaeological Institute awarded Biryukov a gold medal and the title of scientist-archaeologist.
From 1931 to 1937 Biryukov lived in Sverdlovsk, where he worked as the scientific secretary of the Ural Regional Bureau of Local History and lectured at the Pedagogical Institute. In 1938 he returned to Shadrinsk and from 1939 lectured on Ural folklore and Old Russian literature. He collected extensive material for the "Dictionary of the People's Language in the Urals" and in 1955 joined the Union of Soviet Writers. In 1962 Biryukov transferred his archive to Sverdlovsk, thereby laying the foundation for the Ural branch of the Central State Archive of Literature and Art (now the GASO fund). Vladimir Pavlovich Biryukov died in Sverdlovsk on June 18, 1971, and was buried in the Nizhne-Isetskoye Cemetery. During his life he published more than 30 books and pamphlets, as well as over a thousand articles in newspapers and journals dedicated to the culture of the Urals.
