He did not just play chess — he made chess history, conquering the heights in correspondence chess — the most challenging form of the sport. At the same time, he was a tireless researcher of his native Voronezh region. An active life and multifaceted activity made him a great man.

5 important facts about Vladimir Pavlovich you should know:

- He began playing chess at the age of 5 thanks to his father, which set the course for a long and successful sporting career.

- During the Great Patriotic War he trained as a signalman in Leningrad and became an officer in the Soviet Army. Interaction with Leningrad chess players helped Vladimir Pavlovich significantly develop his chess skills.

- He won the World Correspondence Chess Championship (1962–1965) and repeatedly took prize places in subsequent tournaments at various levels.

- Vladimir Pavlovich was a Doctor of Historical Sciences and the author of fundamental studies on the history of Russia and Voronezh regional studies. His doctoral dissertation was devoted to the Belgorod Line, which included the fortress of Kostensk and the Borshchevsky Trinity Men's Monastery.

- For almost two decades he was the vice-president of the International Correspondence Chess Federation and actively promoted this form of chess in the USSR.

On September 7, the 7th chess tournament dedicated to the memory of Vladimir Pavlovich Zagorovsky will be held at the Kostenki Museum-Reserve!
