Every year on March 27 all theatre workers and lovers of theatrical art in Russia, as in many other countries, celebrate World Theatre Day, established in 1961. How could one not recall on this day the writer A. N. Radishchev, who loved and valued the theatre?
Since May 1773 Radishchev has served as ober-auditor of the Finnish Division. Service at Bruce’s headquarters required Captain Radishchev (this rank corresponded to the civil rank of titular counsellor) to attend society, dress well, and lead a social life, which, however, did not burden him at all. He became a welcome guest in many capital households; Alexander Radishchev often frequented the theatre, closely followed the new developments on the capital’s stage, and attended performances.
Exactly where and when he watched theatrical performances is not known. But Radishchev’s passionate love for the theatre and his good familiarity with a multitude of plays are evidenced by the numerous play titles, names of playwrights, characters and situations that appear in his works, letters, and notes.
