20 February – Pavel Shatsky at Alexander Scriabin's Piano

On 20 February at 19:00 the third lecture-concert “Shards of the Mystery” from the cycle “Strings of Musical History” will take place in the Scriabin Museum's memorial exhibition.

Once again in our Museum the historical piano that was gifted to A.N. Scriabin almost at the dawn of his career — back in 1895 — will be heard. This remarkable instrument can be called a model of the pianos once produced by the world-famous domestic factory “J. Becker”. Nowadays, after restoration, its voice has regained its former beauty and unique timbre.

Works by Scriabin written in the late years of his life will be performed. These pieces, which vividly demonstrate the possibilities of his new musical language, remain surrounded by legend and keep many secrets hidden in the elusive distances of symbolist understatement.

Host: Candidate of Art History, Associate Professor at the Moscow Conservatory named after P.I. Tchaikovsky, laureate of the Moscow Government Prize, Pavel Shatsky (piano).

21 February – Vasily Cherotchenko

On 21 February at 19:00 a piano music concert will take place in the Scriabin Museum's music salon. Laureate of international competitions Vasily Cherotchenko will perform the six French Suites by J.S. Bach.

Baroque music is unlikely to leave a true classical music lover indifferent. Beneath the apparent lightness and clarity of J.S. Bach's French Suites lies the fundamentality of the images and fullness of sound. The musician's task is to lead the listener from graceful lightness and rhythm to the full movement of life. Will the pianist be able to transport the listener to magnificent palace halls and make them feel like a noble? Or to the main square of a small Breton town to lose oneself in local festivities? Or to wander through intricate narratives suggested to the listener by their own imagination? Just come to the concert and hear it for yourself!

Vasily Cherotchenko is a graduating student of the Academic Music College at the Moscow Conservatory, in the class of People's Artist of Russia Yuri Stepanovich Slesarev. Vasily has repeatedly become a laureate of international piano competitions in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Pskov, Krasnodar, Saratov, Nevel, Druskininkai (Lithuania), Lecce, Tiggiano (Italy), and has won 4 special prizes at the International Piano Competition of Russian Music in Ryazan, including the audience award and the Nikolai Lugansky prize. He is a scholarship holder of the New Names foundation and the Rostropovich foundation. He has participated in many music festivals in Russia and abroad (Days of the Pskov Region in Moscow, Russian Music Festival in Pskov, Mstislav Rostropovich Festival in Orenburg, the First International A.N. Scriabin Music Festival in Moscow in 2022, the Emil Gilels Moscow Piano Music Festival). He has also taken part in international festivals in Italy and Lithuania.

26 February – Matvey Shumkov

On 26 February at 19:00 an evening of piano music will take place in the Scriabin Museum's music salon. Laureate of international competitions Matvey Shumkov will perform works by J.S. Bach, L. van Beethoven, F. Schubert, F. Liszt, S. Rachmaninoff.

"A lyrical talent with a subtle sense of sound and an inclination toward dreamy, introverted interpretation," — so the press service of the Brahms Piano Competition in Detmold (Germany) described Matvey Shumkov's performance. The young talented pianist, a student at the Moscow Conservatory (class of Associate Professor S.A. Kuznetsov and Honored Artist of Russia, Professor E.I. Kuznetsova), made a striking debut by becoming the winner of two major international competitions: the Brahms Competition in Detmold (2nd prize, 2021) and the Vera Lotar-Shevchenko Memorial Competition in Yekaterinburg (1st prize, 2023), as well as laureate of the 1st prize of the Rudolf Kerer Competition in Moscow (2023).

Matvey was born in 2001 in the small Ural town of Irbit, where he received his initial education. Thanks to the support of the prominent museum figure V.A. Karpov, he began serious concert activity at age 14 and continued his studies in Yekaterinburg with Honored Art Worker of Russia, Professor S.G. Beloglazov. His training shaped him into a serious and profound musician with broad horizons and an individual pianistic technique, which laid the foundation for his future career and was reflected in the awards of those years: 2nd prize at the Vera Lotar-Shevchenko Memorial Piano Competition in the junior category (2018), Silver medal of the Delphic Games of Russia (2017), 1st and 2nd prizes of the All-Russian competition “Young Talents of Russia” (2018, 2019), Governor of Sverdlovsk Region scholarship (2016, 2017). He studied at the Sirius Educational Center and at academies of Yuri Bashmet's Winter Arts Festival, participated in intensives of the St. Petersburg House of Music and workshops for pianists, composers and conductors at musicAeterna.

Among his teachers are outstanding musicians of the era: A. Lyubimov, A. Rudin, D. Lively, B. Bloch, N. Trull, A. Sandler. The artist's creative credo is “the musician as a universalist”: he pursues an active concert and festival career on leading Russian stages, pays special attention to performance on historical pianos and in museum halls, as well as to chamber-instrumental and vocal repertoire. He is interested in composition — author of pieces for piano and ensembles, and the first performer of works by like-minded composers. Matvey's repertoire includes significant works by composers from Bach to the present day. He also shows interest in avant-garde music: Webern, Bartók, Schnittke, Feldman, Takemitsu, Pärt. His performances of Bartók pieces were recognized with a special prize at the Brahms Competition.
