MBUK "Kurkiek Local History Center"

In 1999 the MBUK "Kurkiek Local History Center" was established; its founder is the Lahdenpohja Municipal District. The name was given in honor of the historical center of the Lahdenpohja district — Kurkieki. The Center performs the functions of the museum of the Lahdenpohja Municipal District, and its tasks include studying the history and nature of the region, scientific research and exhibition work, developing excursions and educational programs, holding conferences and seminars, publishing guidebooks, and developing tourist routes. Special attention is paid to studying the history of the Karelian people and their material culture in the territory of the Lahdenpohja district, as well as the history of Orthodoxy in the northwestern Lake Ladoga region, identifying the locations of ancient churches, monasteries and Orthodox cemeteries, and installing votive crosses. In 2002 and 2003 the MBUK "Kurkiek Local History Center" was recognized as the best municipal museum of the Republic of Karelia in the republican competition.
