Zadonsk Local History Museum
About museum
The local history museum in Zadonsk was opened after the Revolution at the initiative of Gennady Mikhailovich Pavlov. In the 1930s it was closed, and the fate of the original exhibits remained unknown. In 1975 the museum was reestablished on a voluntary basis and housed in the former city Assumption Cathedral, which had been closed by the Soviet authorities. In 1997 that building was returned to the faithful, and the museum moved to a handsome mansion on Monastyrskaya Street. After renovations in 2000 a new exhibition hall was created here, which tells about the distant past of the Upper Don, about Zadonsk and its monasteries, about traditional peasant life, and about notable people. The exhibition was updated in 2014. Now museum visitors can use the permanent exhibitions on the 1st and 2nd floors, off-site excursions, interactive museum programs, lectures and many other services. The museum invites everyone to learn about the history of Zadonsk.
