The All-Russian Historical and Ethnographic Museum in Torzhok (VIEM) was founded on May 24, 1988 at the initiative of academician Dmitry Sergeyevich Likhachev. It is located in the historic part of the town and occupies several buildings that are architectural monuments of the 18th-19th centuries. Several permanent exhibitions are on display, dedicated to the history of Torzhok and the Novotorzhskaya land, traditional household life and the spiritual culture of the Russian people, hopped beverages and the rituals associated with them, as well as the history of the Borisoglebsky Monastery. The Exhibition Hall hosts rotating temporary exhibitions on a variety of topics. In addition, the museum has an art workshop 'Istok', whose task is to draw attention to the traditions of Russian weaving and the famous Novotorzhok gold embroidery.
