19th-century prison castle
About museum
In 1819 the Narovchat prison was built; it comprised two buildings: an administrative building and the main building. The administrative building consists of three parts, the central part of which has a through passage with two rooms on either side, and the lateral parts house a bathhouse and guardrooms. In the main building, in the yard, there are an office with a storeroom, a kitchen, a hospital, and eight cells for prisoners. In 1915 a church dedicated to Alexius the Man of God was incorporated into the prison. The Narovchat prison served for a long time as an intermediate point for exiles, and external security was provided by the supervisory staff. In 1918 the county people's militia operated in the prison, and in the 1940s local residents and clergymen who were subjected to repression were detained there. In 1959 the Narovchat prison was closed.
