Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ, Kargopol
About museum
The Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ, built in 1562, was the main shrine of Kargopol. This five-domed white-stone church of rectangular form was the first stone building in the town. In the 17th–18th centuries chapels were added and it was reinforced with massive buttresses. In 1936 the church was transferred to the Kargopol Museum. On the second tier a carved 18th-century iconostasis and a fragment of a medieval fresco have been preserved. On the cathedral's ground floor there is an exhibition 'The Sixth Day of Creation', where you can see a unique collection of 'heavens' from the Kargopol Museum's holdings. Here you can feel the spirit of the Middle Ages.
