Saint Petersburg Toy Museum
About museum
Saint Petersburg Toy Museum is one of the first private museums in Saint Petersburg, founded on May 7, 1997. It is the second toy museum in Russia after the oldest museum in Sergiev Posad.
In the 20th century the toy entered the world of fine art and gained the status of an art work. It was at that time that the special importance of the children's toy for both aesthetic education and the development and learning of the child was finally recognized. Therefore in the museum the toy is not only exhibited but also "lives": it takes part in performances, is created in master classes, and becomes a subject of discussion in lectures.
The museum has ever-growing collections of both Russian and foreign toys — folk, industrial, and artist-made; it regularly holds exhibitions of author-made art dolls and toys, as well as rare thematic collections from private holdings.
The museum carries out scientific, research, and restoration work, and offers guided tours and classes for children and adults.
The staff of the Saint Petersburg Toy Museum is open to cooperation and joint projects, readily organizes various off-site events and participates in citywide events.
