Submarine S-189
About museum
In the early 2000s a veterans' organization of submariners decided to raise the sunken submarine and turn it into a museum. This was achieved in 2005 by a submarine veteran, now businessman, Andrey Artyushin, at his own expense and with the assistance of the leadership of the Leningrad Naval Base. The decayed submarine was brought to the dock of the Kanonersky Shipyard, where experienced specialists took on its restoration.
Two years later the repaired S-189 was moored at the pier on Lieutenant Schmidt Embankment. Another two years were required to restore the compartments, interior details and internal equipment. Necessary spare parts were collected from across the country.
The museum was opened in 2010. The entire interior of the submarine was restored to its original condition. Former submariners provided paintings, clothing, personal belongings, photographs and archives for the museum. All compartments are open to visitors. Tours are conducted by veterans who previously served on Project 613 boats and know not only the vessel's technical equipment but also its service history in detail.
