About museum
In March 1998 the Duma (city council) of Kurchatov and the city administration set about organizing a local history museum, which was opened to visitors in June 2000. The museum's holdings number over 30,000 items. Particularly valuable is the "Archaeology" collection, which contains materials from excavations of the Byki Stone Age site, the Penskoye settlement and archaeological surveys across the Kurchatov district. In addition, the museum displays the "Applied Arts" and "Ethnography" collections, which include traditional costumes of the Kursk Governorate, household items from the 19th–20th centuries, and collections of traditional leather toys made by renowned craftswomen. Unique photographs and documents of Kurchatov city and district from the 20th century, including the period of the city's and the nuclear power plant's construction, are also among the museum's treasures.
