Novotorzhsky Kremlin
About museum
The Upper Settlement is an archaeological monument of federal significance and a sightseeing site for tourists passing through Torzhok. The All-Russian Historical and Ethnographic Museum has developed an open-air, exhibition-interactive complex called the “Novotorzhsky Kremlin.” It includes a model of the 17th-century Mikhailovskaya carriage (passage) tower, a hut with a permanent exhibition of armor and weapons, a historical shooting range with models of siege engines, a torture platform, a craftsman's hut, a blacksmith's corner, wooden market stalls, a jousting ground, a rest gazebo, a wooden slide for winter sledding and swings. Visitors can walk around the Novotorzhsky Kremlin, learn about ancient Russian weaponry, hear about the heroic deeds of their ancestors, shoot bows and crossbows, learn to throw spears, take selfies with weapons and in armor, and also mint a coin and forge a pisalo (a metal stylus). At local festivals and celebrations you can learn about the military service and exploits of Novotorzh residents in the Great Patriotic War (World War II).
