About museum
The Tonkino Museum was established by decision of the CPSU and the executive committee of the district council in 1973, and opened its doors to visitors in January 1974. The first director was Mikhail Zuikov. Initially the museum was located in the old wooden building of the former cinema, built in 1955, and had 8 departments with 2,436 exhibits. In 1993 the museum received the title 'People's'. Later, in 2004, it moved to a new brick building with 9 departments based on local historical material. Currently the museum's collections comprise about 4,500 exhibits, including rare items: mammoth bones and those of other ancient animals; household items from the 18th–20th centuries; wedding ornaments of the 18th–19th centuries; and awards from the Great Patriotic War. Any item donated to the museum becomes part of its collection, and therefore part of history. The Tonkino Local History Museum, with a large number of antique items and exhibits and an interesting and varied program for visitors, invites you to experience the history and atmosphere of Tonkino.
