Mordovian Courtyard Museum and Ethnographic Complex
About museum
In 2012, built to mark the 1,000th anniversary of the union of the Mordovian people with the peoples of Russia, the museum and ethnographic complex "Mordovskoye Podvorye" was opened. It recreates a traditional peasant homestead with a residential house and all the outbuildings – a barn, a banya (Russian bathhouse), a carpentry workshop, a cowshed, a vegetable garden and beehives. Guided tours, lectures, large-scale events, interactive games, and family and community celebrations are held here. At the Mordovian Courtyard, residents and visitors of Saransk can get acquainted with folk culture, experience the role of the master or mistress of the homestead, try on a Mordovian costume, put on bast shoes (lapti), pound millet and even put a pot into the stove.
