About museum

Novosibirsk Museum opened in the building at Sovetskaya 24 on March 1, 2010. The city museum was planned to be created back in 1943 — for the city’s 50th anniversary — but for obvious reasons this did not happen.

Today the Novosibirsk Museum consists of 8 district branches, the Novosibirsk Museum “On the Embankment”, the G.M. Budagov House museum and the Documentary Film House Museum.

The staff of the Novosibirsk Museum are actively engaged in educational outreach, organizing street exhibitions and exhibitions in metro underpasses, outfitting the carriage of the Novosibirsk museum train, and carrying out cultural and educational projects.

The Novosibirsk Museum’s collection contains documents and exhibits, an extensive video library, and a significant library collection. The foundation for the collection’s formation was the work of Yuri Kondratyuk, the pioneer of Russian and world astronautics.

Partners of the Novosibirsk Museum include organizations in the fields of education and culture, as well as city residents who provide items for exhibitions or donate unique documents, photographs, and objects.

In 2011 the Museum opened the Oral History Center — a joint project of the Museum and the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The Center collects oral materials to create a unified city archive of oral and visual texts, systematized into audio, photo, and video collections.

Since 2012 the Novosibirsk Museum has been implementing the "Novosibirsk — City-Museum" project. Project activities include author-led tours of streets and notable city sites, historical shows, and the creation of virtual and electronic historical resources.

In May 2013, at the initiative of the Novosibirsk Museum, a new unique project was launched to create an information database about conscripts and residents of Novosibirsk Oblast and the city of Novosibirsk who participated in the Great Patriotic War — "Memorial of the Glory of Novosibirsk Residents".
