Chekhov's Little House Museum

About museum

Chekhov's Little House Museum is a memorial museum in Russia, located in a small wing on the grounds of the former residence of Taganrog merchant A. D. Gnutov on Chekhov Street. Here, from 1859 to 1861, the family of P. E. Chekhov lived, and on January 29, 1860 the third son of that family — Anton Pavlovich Chekhov — was born here. In 1914 a memorial plaque was placed on the wall of the house, and in 1916, at the initiative of the Chekhov Circle, the city administration purchased the courtyard plot on Chekhov Street. In 1920 the little house was vacated by tenants, and in 1926 a museum was opened there. The museum's exhibition introduces visitors to the life and childhood of A. P. Chekhov, and the interiors of the museum recreate the domestic atmosphere of the 19th century of a modest merchant family from southern Russia. Chekhov's Little House Museum is part of the State Budgetary Cultural Institution of the Rostov Region 'Taganrog State Literary, Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve'. At the museum you can learn more about A. P. Chekhov's life and work, and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the 19th century.
