Chumel Chvëch Museum (Selkup Land)
About museum
Parabelsky District is home to the southern group of Selkups. In August 2016, an ethnographic museum of Selkup culture called 'Chumel Chvëch (Selkup Land)' was opened on the upper glade of Lake Oskino. It consists of nine complexes that showcase the history and everyday life of the Selkups in different periods. At present a pile-supported granary, a household labaz (raised storage platform), a portable chum (nomadic tent), a semi-subterranean Selkup dwelling, and a log izba have been built here. The museum offers a unique opportunity to see the Selkups' history and way of life and their transformation from semi-subterranean dwellings to log houses following the arrival of Russian settlers. The museum is open in summer and blends beautifully into the natural landscape of the Ob floodplain.
