The museum's primary task is to collect, preserve, study and promote materials on the history and legal culture of Russia. The museum also conducts scientific and educational activities, publishes research, and organizes conferences and exhibitions.

\r\nThe museum was founded in 1972 by decision of the rectorate and was granted official status in December 1976 by Order No. 551 of the Minister of Higher Education of the RSFSR, I. F. Obraztsov, dated December 31. It belongs to the university's academic, research and teaching group and reports to the Vice-Rector for Research, the Dean of the Faculty of History and Law, and the Head of the Department of Russian History. The main task of the museum is to collect, preserve, study and promote materials related to the history and legal culture of Russia. It also organizes scientific and educational events, publishes research, and holds conferences and exhibitions.
