A.I. Sumbatov-Yuzhin Memorial Apartment
About museum
Alexander Ivanovich Sumbatov-Yuzhin (1857–1927) was a famous Russian actor, playwright, and theatre figure whose role in the life of the Maly Theatre cannot be overstated. In 1892 he moved into house No. 5 on Bolshoy Palashevsky Lane and lived there until his death. Afterwards his widow, Maria Nikolaevna Sumbatova, turned two rooms into memorial rooms and held commemorative evenings on the 17th of each month. In 2001 four rooms were transferred to the Maly Theatre, where exhibitions were prepared over the following five years. In 2006 the museum-apartment was opened to visitors. It was closed for renovation in 2014 and reopened in 2015. On Saturdays and Sundays the apartment's curator, Vera Valeryevna Tarasova, conducts tours. To visit the museum, tickets must be purchased at the theatre box office or on its website. In this place one can feel the history of the Maly Theatre, regardless of age — both adults and children will enjoy it.
