Markovo Local History Museum
About museum
In Markovo, the local historical traditions of the first settlers have always been valued and passed down from generation to generation. In the 1960s, local historians Orest and Yuliy Korsovetsky, along with E. Gunchenko, collected more than 500 exhibits for the village museum. In 2002, an order was issued to establish a branch of the Museum Center 'Heritage of Chukotka', whose collections today hold more than 800 items. The museum's exhibition tells of the material and spiritual culture of the reindeer-herding peoples living in the Markovo area, such as the Chukchi, Yukaghirs, Evens, and Chuvans. The collection includes various household items, archaeological and paleontological finds, minerals, documents, photographs and books, as well as rare exhibits, for example antique hats, arrow quivers, shamanic objects, and materials on the activities of the first parochial school in Chukotka from the late 19th to the early 20th century.
