Makaryev Local History Museum
About museum
In March 1959 the Local History Museum was opened in the town of Makaryev; it was founded by A. I. Shmakov. It is housed in a building designated as an architectural monument of federal significance, built in 1806. The museum displays items collected by Shmakov and members of the local history club based at the Pioneers' House. Exhibitions on display include: "The City Keeps the Memory of the Past" (about the town's history), "Maestro Zharov" (about the composer, conductor and regent of the Don Cossack Choir S. A. Zharov) and "UNZHLAG — an Unknown Island of the GULAG Archipelago" (about the presence in Makaryevsky District of a corrective-labor camp that was part of the GULAG system). The museum invites everyone to learn about the town's history and other interesting exhibits.
