Pottery Workshop

About museum

Pottery craft appeared on the Kerch Peninsula in the 6th century BC, after the arrival of Greek settlers. In 2011, a Pottery Workshop was opened in the basement of the Historical and Archaeological Museum. It recreates the atmosphere of the ancient workshops of Panticapaeum and is decorated with frescoes in the style of Pompeian painting. The potter's wheel is the central feature of the workshop. Master classes are held here on making replicas of ancient exhibits using ancient techniques. Opposite it is a niche with a table for making masks and terracotta figurines. The workshop also displays samples of museum ceramic items produced using ancient techniques. Here you can try making reduced replicas of ancient Greek amphorae, figurines, sundials and masks. For beginner potters there are master classes using the clay employed by Greek craftsmen. Tours are also conducted for children and people with disabilities.
