About museum
The Elgya Museum of Nature was founded in 1967 and officially opened on October 2, 1971. It was established to study the natural sciences and was awarded the title “Excellent School Museum.” In 1990 it was renamed the Young Naturalists Station — House of Nature, and in 1994, by order of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), it was reorganized into the Elgya Regional Museum and Ecological Center named after B. N. Andreev. In 1998 a branch was added — the local history museum “Tuoydaakh Alaas.” Today the museum displays more than 4,000 exhibits, including 570 species and subspecies of birds, over 400 mounted animal specimens, as well as taxidermy of a polar bear, a giraffe, kulans, a giant kangaroo, an armadillo, crocodiles and others. In the museum you can feel the breath of the Yakut winter and hear the voice of nature.
