About museum

Mitrofan Borisovich Grekov (1882-1934) was a pioneer of Soviet battle painting who became famous during his stay in Novocherkassk. He spent almost 13 years there, of which he worked and served for 4 years and 3 months in institutions and military units, and spent the rest of the time on artistic work. During this period the artist created 74 finished works, including the famous pieces "To Budyonny's Detachment", "Tachanka", "Cavalry Attack", "The Battle near Yegorlyk" and others. Mitrofan Borisovich actively took part in public and educational activities and was beloved and well-known among many friends and acquaintances. The Presidium of the Novocherkassk City Council asked that his memory be commemorated in Novocherkassk. In 1938, Peschanya Street was renamed Grekov Street, and in 1957 the artist's house museum was opened in the house on that street. Mitrofan Borisovich and Antonina Leonidovna began their stay in Novocherkassk in 1918, after Grekov was hired as a drawing and penmanship teacher at Vlashlavsky's 3rd Men's Gymnasium.
