House of the Khomus named after Ivan Fyodorovich Zakharov
About museum
In 1991, based on I.F. Zakharov's collection of khomuses and jewelry, a Blacksmith's House was opened in Vilyuysk. In 1993 it was renamed the House of the Khomus. In recognition of Ivan Fyodorovich's merits in preserving and popularizing the Yakut musical instrument khomus and his contribution to the development of national culture, the museum was given his name. The opening of the exhibition was timed to coincide with the II International Khomus (vargan) Congress.
\r\n
\r\nThe museum's sections tell about the blacksmithing craft of the Yakuts, about the traditional techniques of making the khomus by Vilyuy masters, and introduce the art of khomusist-improvisers. A central place in the exhibition is occupied by a section devoted to the work of I.F. Zakharov — a well-known khomus maker and talented jeweler, whose name is associated with the revival of khomus art in the republic.
