A unique part of the museum collection is the archaeological items. 2,260 items in the main collection, 473 in the scientific and auxiliary collection. Among them are items from the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Eneolithic (7th–4th millennia BC), and the Bronze Age (turn of the 3rd–2nd millennia BC – end of the 2nd millennium BC). The collection of early Slavic items from the late 2nd–3rd centuries AD is unique — a bronze pyramidal bell and bronze pendants, spurs, buckles, beads. Of interest are arrowheads from the Golden Horde era (13th–15th centuries) and women's jewelry from the late Mordvin period (17th–18th centuries). The core of the ethnographic collection consists of festive and everyday, ritual folk and urban clothing, as well as samples of home-woven textiles from the late 19th–early 20th centuries, and examples of local folk crafts — knitting. The museum stores documents, photographs, books and personal belongings of fellow countrymen — prominent figures of Russian science and culture, Heroes of the Soviet Union, honorary citizens of the Balashov district — poets А. Пришельца and Н. Палькин, writer Е. Белянкин, collector of front-line folklore from the Great Patriotic War P. Лебедев, scientists — physicists Н. Тремасов and А. Власов, honored test pilot Ю.А. Гарнаев and other of the most interesting items of the collections
