On December 20, 1980, Atkarsk celebrated the city's 200th anniversary and the opening of the museum on a voluntary basis. It is located in the city center in a one-story brick building from the late 19th – early 20th century, on the grounds of the city park. In January 1990 the museum was granted the status of a branch of the Saratov Regional Museum of Local Lore. It houses archaeological, ethnographic and numismatic collections, natural history and paleontological items, applied art objects and sculptures, as well as works by local artists from the 1950s–1990s. The exhibition 'Atkarsk. Facets of the Centuries XIX–XX–XXI' provides an insight into the life of Atkarsk residents during this period. Today the museum is an important part of the city's cultural space, hosting cultural and educational events, lectures, clubs, meetings and evenings dedicated to significant dates in Russia's history. The museum has become a place of social interaction and a cultural center of Atkarsk.
