Yamal Local History Museum
About museum
On August 27, 1991 the Yamal District Museum was founded, built on the basis of a school museum collection. Over the years the museum has successfully held numerous exhibitions from its own collections, as well as traveling exhibitions from the collections of the I. S. Shemanovsky Museum and Exhibition Complex (MVK) in Salekhard. Numerous articles in newspapers and journals, as well as scientific compilations, archaeological and ethnographic expeditions, attest to the museum's activity. As a result of archaeological excavations in the Yamal district, the museum has expanded its collections with items made of ceramics, bronze, iron, copper, bone and stone dating from the 12th–17th centuries. Some of these items are of not only historical but also considerable artistic value (especially bronze artistic pieces with zoomorphic decoration: plaques, pendants, women's bracelets, ornaments). Some items were donated to the museum by private individuals as chance archaeological finds in the Yamal tundra.
