Yamalo-Nenets Regional Museum and Exhibition Complex named after I.S. Shemanovsky
About museum
In 2021 the Museum of Eastern Siberia celebrates its 115th anniversary. During this period it has gone through many trials: it has burned down, fallen into neglect, and moved to other buildings. But it has preserved what matters most — becoming a cultural phenomenon at the scale of the city and the region. Today the MEC is an architectural complex equipped with a modern technical base, a conference hall, and an expo center. The complex's collections hold over 240,000 exhibits, and the library contains more than 23,000 books and manuscript editions. The core of the museum's holdings consists of collections in archaeology, paleontology, ethnography, and the history and nature of Yamal. It houses unique exhibits and also hosts temporary exhibitions and inter-museum collaborations. The museum presents its collections at events in various regions of Russia and abroad. It runs creative events, scientific and educational outreach projects, children's educational programs, and guided tours. This year the museum staff was awarded the badge of distinction 'Heritage of Yamal'.
