Yamalo-Nenets District Museum and Exhibition Complex named after I.S. Shemanovsky
About museum
In 2021 the Museum of Eastern Siberia celebrates its 115th anniversary. During this period it went through many hardships: it burned down, fell into neglect, and moved to other buildings. But it preserved the main thing — it became a cultural phenomenon at the scale of the city and region. Today the MEC is an architectural complex with a modern technical base, a conference hall, and an expo center. The complex's collections hold more than 240,000 exhibits, and the library contains over 23,000 books and manuscript publications. The core of the museum's holdings consists of the following collections: archaeological, paleontological, ethnographic, and those on the history and nature of Yamal. It houses unique exhibits and hosts temporary exhibitions and inter-museum cooperation. The museum presents its collections at events in various regions of Russia and abroad. Creative events, scientific-educational outreach projects, children's educational projects, and guided tour programs are held here. This year the museum staff was awarded the badge of distinction 'Heritage of Yamal'.
